What to Pack for Desire Riviera Maya

15 February 2026

Theme night costumes, beach essentials, and the one thing everyone forgets. A packing guide from someone who has done it six times.

The golden rule

Pack half what you think you need. You will spend most of your time in a swimsuit, a robe, or nothing at all. Desire Riviera Maya is not a place for outfit changes every two hours. It is a place for sun, sea, and letting go.

Theme night essentials

This is where most first-timers overthink it. You do not need a professional costume for every single night. Here is what actually matters:

  • Monday (Glow Night): UV-reactive body paint from Amazon and a few glow bracelets. Total cost: under ten pounds. Buy it before you fly because the resort shop is limited.
  • Tuesday (Lingerie Night): The single most anticipated night of the week. Ladies: bring something you feel incredible in. Gentlemen: fitted black boxer-briefs minimum. A silk robe goes a long way.
  • Wednesday (Toga Night): The resort provides white sheets. Bring a gold belt or brooch if you want to elevate it.
  • Thursday (Red Night): One red item is enough. A red dress, red shorts, a red tie. Nobody polices it rigorously.
  • Friday (White Party): The signature event. Bring proper white clothes, not a washed-out grey t-shirt. Linen trousers and a white shirt work perfectly.
  • Saturday (Naughty School): Creative interpretation encouraged. A plaid skirt, a loose tie, knee socks. It does not need to be literal.

What everyone forgets

Reef-safe sunscreen. Mexico takes marine protection seriously and many popular brands are now banned in the Riviera Maya. Check the label before you pack. The resort shop sells compliant options but the markup is steep.

Footwear

One pair of smart sandals for dinner. One pair of flip-flops for the pool. Running shoes if you use the gym. That is it. Leave the heels at home unless you truly love them; the resort paths are uneven stone.

The Eden kit

If you plan to visit The Eden (the clothing-optional area), bring a sarong and a waterproof phone pouch. Phones are allowed in Eden but you must have the camera covered at all times.

Electronics

Mexico uses the same plugs as the US and Canada (Type A/B). If you are coming from the UK or Europe, bring an adaptor. The rooms have USB ports but they charge slowly. A portable battery is worth its weight in gold for long pool days.

What NOT to pack

  • Formal evening wear: there is no dress code beyond theme nights
  • Excessive toiletries: the rooms stock L'Occitane amenities
  • Cash for tipping: everything goes on a wristband (though a few dollars for housekeeping is appreciated)
  • Snorkelling gear: available free at the water sports station

Our actual packing list

After six visits, this is exactly what goes in our bag: three swimsuits (they never fully dry overnight), two casual dinner outfits, theme night pieces for the three nights we care about most, reef-safe sun cream, a sarong, sandals, and a book we never finish. That is it. Every single time.
